PSYD 806 Psychoanalytic Theory and Therapy

Students are introduced to psychoanalytic theories of development, personality, and psychopathology, as well as to case formulation and technique from psychoanalytic perspectives. A variety of psychoanalytic theories are explored, from classical Drive and Ego Psychologies through Object Relations and Self Psychologies and on to more contemporary applications (e.g., Relational and Intersubjective Approaches). Deidentified case material illustrates applications of the theories, and the role of the therapist in each approach is discussed. Students will also consider the contemporary theoretical, clinical, and empirical literature comprising the evidence base supporting these approaches.
