SPE 537 Family-Community Partnerships & Assessment
Students will learn the principles of Universal Design for Transition (UDT) to understand the importance of creating culturally competent and universally designed transition plans that promote equity and access to opportunities for all learners. Additionally, students will explore multiple means of communication to foster collaborative relationships with students, families, professionals, paraeducators, and human service agencies. Through discussions of culturally sustaining collaborative approaches to transition, using UDT principles and practices, candidates will learn and understand educational assessment strategies that promote the continual development of students from all cultural and linguistic backgrounds during a school-to-post-school transition. Assessments include both formal and informal career and vocational evaluations, exploring student community supports and resources, and identifying student preferences to match them with meaningful community and employment opportunities. Students engage in case studies to deepen their understanding of writing UDT lesson plans, coordinating interagency collaboration, and fostering student self-determination. After assessing student preferences and abilities, students will participate in a process to create measurable post-school goals that align with UDT instructional activities promoting an equitable and effective transition.
