This course provides foundational knowledge for healthcare careers. It offers a comprehensive introduction to the ever-evolving landscape of health professions. Students explore various health careers, learn about the healthcare system, and develop professional skills, including teamwork, safety, and ethics. Emphasis is placed on understanding the roles and responsibilities of interprofessional healthcare teams, as well as the educational, ethical, and community-oriented competencies required in health professions. Students will examine health disparities, patient-centered care, and emerging trends such as telemedicine and integrative health.

This course provides an in-depth analysis of the United States healthcare system, examining its historical development, structure, financing, and regulatory mechanisms. Students will study key policies affecting healthcare access, cost, and quality, including Medicare, Medicaid, the Affordable Care Act, and recent federal and state-level reforms. The course also explores health equity, social determinants of health, and the role of policy in shaping population outcomes. Comparative perspectives from international health systems will be integrated. Through policy briefs, debates, and real-world case studies, students will gain the analytical tools to evaluate and influence healthcare policy as future health professionals or advocates.

This course is designed to immerse students in supervised, real-world health sciences environments. Students complete 80 hours at an external site, gaining exposure to professional roles, interdisciplinary teams, and community health settings. The accompanying 10-hour seminar component supports reflective practice, professional development, and integration of academic learning with field experience. Emphasis is placed on ethical practice, cultural competence, and foundational career skills. Practicum placements may include clinical, administrative, public health, or community-based settings.
