SPE 500 Introduction to and Methods of Teaching Students with Disabilities
The course focuses on the characteristics, identification, and initial instructional methods for cross-categorical K–22 students who receive special education services. Emphasis is placed on the historical, philosophical, psychological, legal, and pedagogical implications and issues related to special education. Candidates demonstrate an understanding of collaboration, assessment, and instructional planning based on knowledge of the discipline, students, community, and curriculum goals. Through application of the UDL framework, candidates develop inclusive learning environments and instructional opportunities that support the intellectual, social, and personal development of all students while considering the impact of disabilities on cognitive, physical, emotional, social, and communication development. Candidates also learn to provide culturally responsive and inclusive instructional opportunities that are adapted to the strengths and needs of diverse learners and responsive to students’ varying approaches to learning. 15 field hours are required.
