SPE 536 Transition Foundations, Preparation & Planning

This course is designed for candidates holding current LBS1 certification who wish to deepen their knowledge and understanding of the philosophical, historical, and legal foundations of special education as they relate to the transition from school to post-school environments. It provides a comprehensive exploration of how disabilities impact an individual’s cognitive, physical, emotional, social, and communication development, and integrates this understanding into effective transition planning. By completing this course, candidates will gain insight into strategies that support the intellectual, social, and personal growth of individuals, ensuring a meaningful and successful transition to adulthood. The course also highlights the role of the transition specialist, along with the collaborative partnerships and responsibilities of agencies and personnel involved in the transition process. Emphasis is placed on developing collaborative relationships with students, families, schools, and community organizations to create a unified approach to transition-focused educational services. Candidates will learn how to foster these relationships and leverage community resources to maximize support for individuals as they move from school-based to post-school opportunities.
