ECE 555 Inquiry and Research in Early Childhood Education

In this course, students explore the role of research as a tool for inquiry, reflection, and continuous improvement in early childhood education settings. Students examine how research can be used to investigate questions that emerge from professional practice and to guide informed decisions within early childhood programs. Through the development of an action research project conducted in their own setting (or approved alternative setting), students identify a relevant topic, review related literature, collect and analyze data, and reflect on the implications of their findings for practice. Through the process of investigation, students will learn how to critique published research and explore the publication and research presentation process. Students will develop practical skills investigating classroom and program practices using resulting evidence to inform current and future leadership and practice improvements within the field of early childhood education.
