RLR 520 Survey of Youth Literature, P to Grade 12
This course examines PreK-12 fiction and nonfiction trade books featuring a range of protagonists, subjects, and themes across genres and formats to help candidates develop broad knowledge and criticality around these texts. Candidates use professional resources to identify, locate, evaluate, and select high-quality titles featuring different ethnicities, cultures, abilities, and gender identities for English language arts, biliteracy, and content area instruction using literary, cultural, and pedagogical criteria. Candidates also conduct classroom library audits, assessing literacy environments and book collection composition, to develop recommendations for in-service teachers.
