RLR 501 Teaching Beginning Literacy

This course introduces theoretical perspectives on literacy development and provides an overview of developmentally appropriate practices for teaching early literacy. Equitable assessment and instruction are emphasized to address the key components of early literacy: oracy, phonological awareness, word recognition, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing. Students will engage with methods that highlight the interconnected nature of these components within a comprehensive, asset-based early literacy framework. This course also focuses on differentiated instructional approaches, including small-group reading instruction, to support learners from diverse cultural, linguistic, and ability backgrounds.
