CIC 505 Data Literacy

Through learning about data literacy, candidates will learn to understand, analyze, and use data together as a tool for making instructional and curriculum decisions. Over the course of the term, candidates will identify a Problem of Practice (PoP) in their own professional setting and explore how to address it by looking at both “satellite data” (broad numerical trends) and “street data” (qualitative, human-centered insights). In this process, candidates will learn how to ask meaningful questions, examine different types of evidence, and work with peers to develop practical, context-specific solutions to instructional and curricular challenges. The course also focuses on how data can inform curriculum design and teaching by helping educators understand student learning needs, identify equity gaps, and improve learning experiences for diverse students. Lastly, candidates will also engage in reflection and discussion about the ethical use of data, including issues of representation, voice, and fairness in decision-making. By going beyond test scores and including student and family perspectives, candidates will be able to identify hidden equity gaps and design culturally responsive, context-specific instructional and curricular responses that improve teaching and learning outcomes.
