SWK 313 Child Welfare Systems and Services

SWK 313 provides a comprehensive overview of policy and practice issues within the field of child welfare, focusing on the roles and functions of child welfare workers across various content areas. The course examines child welfare services as integral components within a broader network designed to address diverse child-related issues faced by children and their families. Exploring the rights of children, parents, and society, the course delves into areas of conflict and resolution. Topics include the nature and consequences of child abuse and neglect, as well as protective and risk factors, and the corresponding system responses. Students will acquire and refine skills necessary for engaging with individuals and families involved in child welfare, as well as those within the juvenile and criminal justice systems, and those affected by substance misuse and intimate partner violence. The course critically examines both current and historical policies, while also integrating evidence-based approaches to effectively serve children and families impacted by trauma.
