This is a course on the elements and principles of visual design. Students will be given the opportunity to read, observe and develop their knowledge about design through hands-on experiences. This course is an introduction to the art of the peoples of West and Central Africa through an anthropological examination of the religions, myths, histories, and artifacts created by these peoples. It is focused on the traditional visual arts, with emphasis on sculptural arts. Students explore the art of the West and Central Africa, highlighting the range variety of artifacts created by major groups in specific regions. Development of painting, sculpture, architecture and the crafts in Europe and the United States during the 19th and 20th centuries. Students study relationships between art of a period and societal contexts, including political events, economic trends, and technological advances of the time.
