Teachers who have an Illinois Professional Educator License endorsed for early childhood education, elementary education or special education may add an endorsement in secondary education by satisfying requirements listed below.

Candidates for a subsequent teaching endorsement should be admitted to NLU if they wish to have their transcripts reviewed and evaluated for the endorsement.

In addition to National College of Education Graduate Admission Requirements, program requires:

  •  Valid and current Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) endorsed in the teaching field (teaching endorsements can’t be added to administrative and school support PEL’s)

Endorsement Requirements:

  • 18 SH of college-level content coursework specific to the area sought
    • 12 SH must be in the specific science or social science area sought (e.g. biology or political science)
    • 6 SH must be taken in at least one other science or social science area (as applicable to the endorsement sought)
    • Science endorsement requires coursework in both the biological sciences (biology, ecology/environmental science) and physical sciences (chemistry, earth & space science, physics.)
  • Secondary Education content area test specific to the content area sought
  • A grade of “C” or better in all coursework is required
