Computer Science and Information Systems Minor

The minor in Computer Science and Information Systems allows non-CSIS major students to enhance their degree and broaden employment options in the area of computing. This minor combines theory and practical application of information systems to real-world scenarios. Students gain the skills necessary to implement computing and information technology in their chosen field. Students will be better prepared to work with computer science and information systems professionals in a variety of settings.

Program Details

• Requires 30 QH for completion
• CSS 200 is the Gateway course. It is recommended that students take this course first, or transfer in an equivalency, to ensure they have the key concepts needed for the other coursework.
• Students may transfer in up to 15 quarter hours and/or 3 courses that can be applied toward the minor. Transfer credit will be accepted for any coursework taken in a Computer Science Department at other institutions; specific course equivalencies are not required to fulfill computer science electives.
• All courses in the minor must be completed with a grade of C or better
• Students enrolled in the B.S. in Computer Science and Information Systems or any B.A. in Education program cannot enroll in this minor
• The courses in the minor cannot be double counted for credit towards a major, minor or concentration
• The minor is offered in fully online or blended formats

Program Learning Outcomes

At the completion of the program, students will be able to:

PLO 1: Identify, explain, analyze, and apply fundamental computer information systems concepts such as hardware, networking, software, programming, security, and data management.

PLO 2: Use software tools and techniques such as application programming, web development, database development, information systems security development, and analysis techniques.

PLO 3: Evaluate and suggest improvements to the security of information technology in an organization.

PLO 4: Explain and analyze the role of computer science and information systems in diverse, globally distributed work-teams and organizations.

PLO 5: Devise and plan the delivery of strategic, innovative technological solutions for organizational challenges.

PLO 6: Use best practices and tools for own career advancement and in mentoring others.

In addition to the requirements above, students will select 3 courses (15 QH) from any of the B.S. in Computer Science and Information Systems and/or concentrations in Analytics; App and Software Development; Cybersecurity; Network and Information Security; Web Development; or any future concentrations developed for the CSIS program to complete the 30 QH requirement for the minor. Transfer credit will be accepted for any coursework taken in a Computer Science Department at other institutions; specific course equivalencies are not required to fulfill computer science electives.
