Humanities Concentration

This concentration allows students to supplement their program with an interdisciplinary investigation into enduring human questions, the artistic expressions and intellectual artifacts that seek to answer them, and the rich histories and cultures in which those answers have been developed and celebrated. The concentration offers various analytic schema and content explorations that students can use to interpret their world as they articulate their own understandings rooted in their unique narratives and perspectives. This concentration is designed to create a model of inquiry-based and experiential learning in the humanities as we apply best practices in rigorous interpretive and analytic writing instruction within the Undergraduate College. These skills are not only intrinsically valuable, but more and more employers are desiring and valuing the critical and creative thought associated with humanistic inquiry.

Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs)

Upon completion of their Humanities concentration, students will have engaged in a preparation to:

PLO 1. Synthesize competencies in the major subfields of the humanities (Specialized Knowledge).
PLO 2. Interpret and evaluate complex texts from the major subfields of the humanities (Specialized Knowledge).
PLO 3. Practice and refine oral and written dialogue around humanities topics and themes (Intellectual Skills - Communicative Fluency).
PLO 4. Conduct and evaluate research in interdisciplinary scholarship (Intellectual Skills - Use of Information Resources).
PLO 5. Critically analyze artistic productions in context and synthesize the relationship between art and the human condition (Applied and Collaborative Learning).
PLO 6. Evaluate knowledge of how marginalized groups resist oppression through humanistic endeavors (Intellectual Skills - Ethical Reasoning, Civic and Global Learning).
PLO 7. Apply themes from the humanities and programmatic experiences to professional goals and/or further studies (Professional Skills).

Concentration Details:

  • Requires 15 QH for completion
  • Requires a minimum grade of "C" for each course in the concentration
  • Requires completion of the following program pre-requisites: ART 101 or ART 105, ENG 101, HIS 103 or equivalent courses, or permission of the Program Chair 
  • A minimum of 15 QH must be taken at NLU

Note: The same courses may not be used to satisfy the concentration and program major requirements.

Students must choose a min of 15 QH from the HUM courses.

Note: All HUM courses may be taken in any order except for HUM 490, which requires three HUM courses to be completed as pre-requisites, unless waived by the Program Chair.
